What Diwali is, in short

Diwali — also written Deepavali or Deepawali — is the Hindu festival of lights, celebrated by more than a billion people worldwide. It marks the return of Rama to Ayodhya after fourteen years of exile, which is why lamps are lit: to light his path home. It is also celebrated by Sikhs as Bandi Chhor Divas and by Jains as Mahavira Nirvana.

Diwali also functions as the new year in several regional traditions — Bestu Varas in Gujarat, Padwa in Maharashtra, Ugadi and Gudi Padwa elsewhere — which is why the festival week is as much a fresh start as it is a celebration.

How Diwali is celebrated

The ritual centrepiece is the lighting of oil lamps — diyas — on the evening of 8 November. Rows are set along windowsills, doorsteps, rooftops and balconies, and the light is read symbolically: darkness pushed back by knowledge, and as many small lights as possible to push it back further.

Alongside the lamps, most households clean the home thoroughly, lay a rangoli or kolam at the door, prepare a thali for the Lakshmi Puja, wear new clothes, and share mithai — the sweets are as much a signal of the season as the lamps themselves.

In the evening, the family gathers for the aarti, after which the lamps are lit. In recent years most of that lighting has moved outdoors and into shared streets, which is why Diwali night is as much about public lighting as private ritual.

Frequently Asked Questions

What date is Diwali 2026?

Diwali 2026 is on Sunday, 8 November. The full five-day festival runs from Friday 6 November to Tuesday 10 November 2026.

Which day is Lakshmi Puja in 2026?

Lakshmi Puja is performed on Sunday, 8 November 2026, the night of the Kartik Amavasya. This is the same day as main Diwali. In Maharashtra it is called Padwa, and in Gujarat the puja evening is the high point of the celebration.

Is 8 November 2026 a holiday?

Diwali is a gazetted holiday in India, so 8 November 2026 is a public holiday across the country. Many companies also grant 6 or 7 November as well. State and city holidays can differ slightly, so check with your employer rather than assuming the whole week is off.

Why is Diwali called the festival of lights?

Lamps are lit to mark Rama's return to Ayodhya after fourteen years in exile, guiding him home. The lighting also carries a second meaning: darkness representing ignorance, and knowledge pushing it back. That is why the tradition is to light as many lamps as possible rather than only a few.

How many days is Diwali celebrated?

Five days in the widely observed 2026 calendar: Dhanteras (6 Nov), Kali Chaudas (7 Nov), Diwali and Lakshmi Puja (8 Nov), Govardhan Puja (9 Nov) and Bhai Dooj (10 Nov). Regional calendars sometimes stretch to six days, and the order of regional days varies.

Is Diwali the same as Deepavali?

Yes. Deepavali and Deepawali are alternative transliterations of the same word, so a search for either spelling reaches the same festival. Some regions use the Sanskrit form, some the Hindi one, and in Singapore and other diaspora communities the Hindu festival is often called Deepavali.

What is the best time to light the diyas?

Traditionally the lamps are lit at dusk on 8 November, after the Lakshmi and Ganesha puja, and left burning through the night. The precise auspicious window, or muhurat, is calculated for your location and varies by city, so for timing that matters to your ritual, follow your local panchang.

What is Bhai Dooj and why is it part of Diwali?

Bhai Dooj falls on the second day of the bright fortnight of Kartik, Tuesday 10 November 2026. Sisters mark their brothers' foreheads with a tilak of rice paste or kumkum and pray for their long life, and brothers in return give gifts. It is a sibling celebration that sits at the close of the Diwali week.
